Utterly gorgeous 1940s dress in blackest rayon, handles and drapes beautifully, from ‘Peasant Art Importing Co’ label, a New York company operational from at least the mid 1920s through to the ‘50s from what I can find online (original Vogue magazine ad from 1927 attached, and a transcript from ’37), specialising in Eastern European and Russian embroidery. Semi fitted to the waist, with skirt gored in panels for fulness, and side metal zip fastening. The bodice is beautifully hand embroidered with florals in wool, glossy yarn, and chenille, and features pads in the shoulder for that classic silhouette. Long sleeves are gathered to flat cuffs to ‘billow’ slightly, and are finished with the same wonderful embroidery and buttons. A single button fastens the neck, with more embroidery on the small pointed collar. Unlined
Just under 16” between shoulder seams
Chest of garment 44” max, not designed to be tight here
Waist of garment 33” looks fine belted in a little
Hip 48
Mid shoulder to waist 16.5”
Skirt length 28”
Presents very well, we professionally restored a few issues invisibly so she’s clean and ready to wear! Three scrubs below neckline which are backed with the neck facing and daintily stitched so less noticeable when worn, and a historic darn to back neck. Tiny hole to side of chest, and small neat darn above one cuff.
